The Manager City Planning is a vital role within the City of Stonnington, focused guiding the future development of our city.
In this position, you will help shape a vibrant municipality known for its diverse built environments and iconic activity centres, including Chapel Street, High Street Armadale, and Hawksburn Village.
You will have play an important role in transformative projects, including the Jam Factory redevelopment and Chapel Street Transformation, collaborating with industry-leading architects on city-shaping developments.
You will work closely with architects, developers and the community to facilitate and drive excellent planning outcomes, while working alongside internal experts in heritage, urban design, and environmentally sustainable design.
Using your collaborative leadership style you will lead a highly regarded statutory planning and investigations team known for their strong reputation within the community, planning sector, and development industry while fostering a collaborative and innovative workplace culture.
As part of Council’s Planning & Place Directorate you will be recognised for delivering outstanding positive results for both applicants and the community
You will also ensure efficient management of planning applications and compliance with legal frameworks whilst also proactively identifying planning challenges and develop forward-thinking solutions that address the short, medium, and long-term needs of the municipality.
Another key part of your role is building partnerships with internal teams, other government agencies, external stakeholders and the community, ensuring that planning decisions reflect both regulatory requirements and community interests. By promoting transparent communication and stakeholder engagement, you help deliver planning outcomes that benefit the community and create a positive future for the municipality.
This is a full time position with a Total Remuneration Package of $180,000 - $200,000 inclusive of superannuation.

You are based within our bright, modern and sustainable 311 Glenferrie Road office on the corner of High Street and Glenferrie Road in Malvern where boutique stores, cafes and health clubs are in abundance. From the office, you can easily walk to Malvern Gardens, High Street Armadale or Glenferrie Road. Malvern and Armadale Train Station are a short walk away and tram stops are out the front of the building.
Desired Skills and Experience
To be suitable for this role you have a genuine passion for ensuring the long-term prosperity of our city’s future by ensuring compliance with the Planning & Environment Act 1987, the Stonnington Planning Scheme, and Council’s policies on growth and housing to improve outcomes for the future of our communities.
You have experience delivering contemporary leadership and management and have highly developed communication and relationship building skills, excellent presentation skills as well as the ability to manage all aspects of senior leadership including human resource management and liaising with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders. You are a strong leader with a drive for excellence, innovation and organisational change, demonstrating adaptability in complex environments.
You also have:
Proven experience in leading a contemporary integrated planning function that drives a customer centric, contemporary statutory planning service
A visionary leader with a drive and willingness to constructively challenge the norms to get the best outcomes for our community in terms of planning decisions
A detailed understanding of the legislative environment, principles and practices relating to statutory planning
An influential decision maker in relation to significant issues with broad community impact
A genuine passion for engaging and consulting with all stakeholders
A Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, regional planning or environmental science is essential, a Masters degree is highly desirable.
Proven experience in effectively leading teams in a senior-level role related to statutory planning
