Job Description

Reporting to the Director Environment and Infrastructure, and working closely with managers, coordinators, team leaders and other staff, the role will play a critical role in supporting improved OHS planning and management outcomes across the E&I Division.

The E&I Safety Officer will work in close partnership with the corporate Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) Team, acting as the link between organisational strategy and frontline operations. The role will play a leading role, supported by managers, coordinators and team leaders, in developing local safety plans for each E&I business unit, including hazard assessment, risk profile, mitigation strategies and controls, competency verification, training needs analysis, chemical management, and other safety documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on, day-to-day safety support to E&I frontline teams
  • Ensure safe systems of work are developed, maintained and:
    • practical
    • understood
    • consistently applied in field environments
  • Conduct site-based Health Safety & Wellbeing engagement activities (Depot and in the field)
  • Support Contractor Management including assurance activities
  • Support first-line health and safety assurance activities
  • Facilitate and support Health Safety & Wellbeing communication and consultation in the development of Risk Profiles, Risk Assessments, SWMS, procedures, policies, tools and resources to contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
  • Influence and contribute to the development and delivery of Health Safety and Wellbeing preventative initiatives across Environment & Infrastructure teams including but not limited to role-based training, health monitoring and mental health and wellbeing programs
  • Support Leaders and line managers to develop health safety and wellbeing knowledge and capability to build physically and mentally healthy teams
  • Support Leaders and line managers to develop and deliver operational safety inductions tailored to specific roles (e.g. drivers, gardeners)
  • Support teams to proactively manage physical and psychosocial risk in every job
  • Support internal and external health and safety audits
  • Work closely with the Health Safey & Wellbeing Team to develop and implement HSW policies, procedures, and initiatives into operationally relevant practices and preventative programs

Join us in this part time permanent role (3 days per week), offering a competitive salary range of $102,368 - $110,865 (pro rata for part time) plus 12% superannuation. Exact days and hours for this part time position are flexible and could work well for someone who has school pick ups.  There is the need to be onsite at our Tooronga Depot two days a week and there will be the requirement for some early starts due to the nature of the workforce this role supports.

Desired Skills and Experience

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • Demonstrated work experience in local government or construction that showcases applicable skills and knowledge.
  • Proficient in safety reporting systems and data analysis, with the ability to provide meaningful insights.
  • Skilled in building cooperation and gaining support from clients, the public, and other Employees relevant to the role to efficiently manage activities and supervise team members.
  • Proven experience performing a similar role in a comparable capacity within local government or a similar organisation.
  • Proficient in fostering positive relationships and facilitating effective communication to achieve organisational objectives and resolve problems.
  • Respectful and supportive communication style that reflects a culture of curiosity and care for others and the Stonnington community.  
  • Able to collaborate with external stakeholders and internal teams to address specialist issues within the scope of the role by effectively communicating, building strong relationships, coordinating efforts across functions, and resolving cross-functional challenges efficiently.
  • Capability to offer advice or regulate client actions in accordance with established policies, involving understanding and interpreting policies, and providing clear guidance to clients, ensuring compliance and accuracy with decisions subject to appeal or review by senior employees.
  • Capacity to contribute to policy development through investigations, data analysis, and clear presentation of findings, ensuring outputs meet organizational standards and objectives by identifying key issues, gathering relevant data, analysing trends, and presenting insights coherently.
  • Skilled in building cooperation and gaining support from clients, the public, and other Employees relevant to the role to efficiently manage activities and supervise team members.
