Job Description

The Payroll Officer is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of Council's fortnightly payroll and the delivery of high-quality payroll services to employees, managers and key stakeholders. The role ensures compliance with Council's Enterprise Agreement, relevant Awards, legislation, taxation and superannuation requirements while maintaining the integrity of payroll data and systems.

Working collaboratively within the Payroll Team, the Payroll Officer provides specialist payroll advice, resolves complex payroll enquiries, supports continuous improvement initiatives and contributes to the effective delivery of payroll services for approximately 1,060 employees. The role plays a critical part in ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time while supporting Council's commitment to service excellence, compliance and operational efficiency

Key Responsibilities:
•    Process and maintain payroll transactions accurately and within required timeframes.
•    Prepare and process fortnightly payroll activities for Council employees.
•    Process employee commencements, terminations, position changes, leave transactions and payroll adjustments.
•    Maintain accurate employee records and payroll data within Council's payroll system Aurion.
•    Perform payroll reconciliations and undertake payroll checking and validation activities.
•    Process superannuation, taxation and statutory deductions in accordance with legislative requirements.
•    Assist with end-of-year payroll activities, including payment summaries, reconciliations and reporting obligations.
•    Provide accurate and timely payroll advice to employees, managers and stakeholders.
•    Respond to payroll enquiries relating to pay, leave entitlements, deductions, taxation and superannuation.
•    Interpret and apply Council's Enterprise Agreement, Awards, policies and procedures.
•    Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies and issues within agreed service standards.
•    Build positive relationships with internal and external customers through professional and responsive service 

Join us in this full-time permanent role, offering a competitive salary range of $85,404 - $97,836 plus 12% superannuation. 

Desired Skills and Experience

What you’ll need to succeed:

•    Demonstrated work experience Payroll Officer or similar payroll administration role that showcases applicable skills and knowledge.
•    Proficient in Aurion is preferable with a strong ability to apply these skills in a practical work setting.
•    Proven experience performing a similar role in a comparable capacity within local government or a similar organisation.
•    Ability to apply payroll knowledge, legislation and procedural guidelines to resolve payroll matters.
•    Identifies payroll discrepancies and determines appropriate corrective actions.
•    Exercises sound judgement when interpreting Enterprise Agreement provisions and payroll requirements.
•    Escalates complex or high-risk issues appropriately.
•    Ability to assess well-defined objectives and select the most suitable methods, technologies, or processes from various alternatives, leveraging professional knowledge and experience
•    Competence in tackling complex or technical issues that require innovative solutions, demonstrating originality and resourcefulness when faced with unfamiliar challenges.
•    Strong customer service focus with the ability to build positive working relationships.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•    Ability to explain payroll concepts and legislative requirements clearly and professionally.
•    Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
•    Ability to work collaboratively and contribute positively to team culture.
•    Responsible for the accurate processing and maintenance of payroll information within established policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
