Job Description

Provide information and assistance to members of the community including clients regarding policies and legislation, building control responsibilities of Council and Building Regulations.
Manage enforcement of Building Regulations for safety and regulatory compliance within the Banyule municipality.

Process applications or referrals to Council and prepare reports on behalf of the delegate that may be consented to or refused

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide courteous, timely and accurate Building Surveying advice to the public on the telephone and at the Customer Service counter.
  • Accept applications for building permits, consent & report applications and other associated approvals, as necessary, ensuring the correct documentation is submitted.
  • Register applications for Building Permits and Report & Consent applications on Council's computer system as necessary.
  • Under supervision, assess building permit applications and report & consent applications received for compliance with relevant legislation and make recommendations to the Municipal Building Surveyor, MBS for issue or refusal.
  • Prepare submissions for appeals to the Building Appeals Board for review by the Municipal Building Surveyor and where required appear and present at appeals.
  • In consultation with the Building Surveyor and MBS ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Building Department
  • Under supervision of a registered building practitioner in the category of Building Surveyor or Building Inspector, inspect buildings for compliance with regulations, including dangerous buildings, and liaise with the Municipal Building Surveyor regarding appropriate action.
  • Under supervision, prepare and issue Occupancy Permits, Certificates of Final Inspection and building enforcement as necessary for sign off by the Municipal Building Surveyor.
  • Assist with the coordination and scheduling of building inspection requests and the recording of the inspection undertaken.
  • Under supervision, conduct prompt and proper investigation of complaints received in regard to building related matters.

Join us in this full-time permanent role, offering a competitive salary range of $102,368 - $110,865 plus 12% superannuation. 

Desired Skills and Experience

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • Completed, or near completion in tertiary studies to become a Building Surveyor, with experience in the construction industry, building control in Local Government and/or application of building legislation
  • Practical experience in a similar position within the Building Surveying industry
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles of the Building Act, Building Regulations, Building Code of Australia and other related statute
  • Ability to liaise with and accurately relay the content and principles of these Acts and Regulations to other Council departments, regulatory authorities and the public in a courteous and professional manner
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting building plans, specifications and technical literature
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups, fostering a supportive environment and building strong relationships.
