Are you passionate about visual and public art? Do you thrive in curating creative experiences that connect communities? We're looking for a Visual Arts Officer to lead and deliver a dynamic, engaging, and diverse visual arts program while covering maternity leave from 14 April 2025 to 10 April 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your expertise in visual arts management, public art curation, and community engagement to a role where you can make a real impact.
In this role, you'll:
Lead the identification and strategic acquisition of visual art – curate and expand Council’s visual arts portfolio by identifying significant works that contribute to the city’s artistic identity and cultural richness.
Manage Council’s visual and public art collections – oversee the conservation, display, and documentation of artworks, ensuring they are accessible and well-maintained for the community to enjoy.
Oversee the commissioning of public and street art projects – work closely with artists, stakeholders, and the community to bring public spaces to life through innovative and thought-provoking artworks.
Plan and deliver engaging visual arts events – develop and implement a calendar of exhibitions, workshops, and public programs that foster creativity, encourage participation, and celebrate artistic expression across the municipality.
Enhance community arts and cultural engagement – build strong relationships with local artists, cultural organisations, and residents to ensure arts initiatives are inclusive, relevant, and reflective of the community’s diverse perspectives.
This is a unique opportunity to take on a full-time, 12-month contract where you’ll play a key role in shaping the artistic and cultural landscape of our community. With a competitive salary range of $95,013 – $102,899 + 11.5% super, you’ll be part of a team that values creativity, collaboration, and the power of the arts to inspire and connect people. Desired Skills and Experience
What you'll need to thrive
Expertise in visual and public arts – A deep understanding of visual and public arts, including contemporary practices, collection management, and adherence to best practice standards within the industry. You’ll bring your knowledge of both traditional and innovative approaches to arts curation and display.
Proven experience in leading and delivering projects – Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate, and manage visual and public art projects, overseeing every stage from inception to execution, ensuring high-quality outcomes that align with community and cultural objectives.
Experience in organising exhibitions and events – Significant experience in the planning and delivery of visual arts exhibitions, events, and creative programming, including managing logistics, curating displays, liaising with artists, and ensuring events run smoothly.
Strong industry relationships – A well-established network of professional contacts within the arts and culture sector, including artists, curators, and cultural organisations, enabling you to foster collaboration and create opportunities for innovative projects.
Required certifications – A current Victorian driver’s licence and a valid Working with Children Check, or the ability to obtain one, ensuring your ability to fulfil all role requirements while complying with relevant regulations.
